Gen Z and Workplace Transformation

Gen Z, a generation known for its social consciousness and technological proficiency, is entering the workforce with its distinct set of priorities and forcing companies, including management consulting firms, to reshape their organizational culture. The generation demonstrates a strong emphasis on purpose-driven work, inclusive environment, and sustainable practices. As a result, employers are being compelled to align their values with Gen Z’s ethical standards and commitment to social responsibility. Further, Gen Z’s prioritization of mental well-being and flexible work arrangements is driving a shift towards more employee-centric and adaptable work environments.

This blog explores how Gen Z is shaping the future of organizations.

Focus on Environmental Sustainability

Gen Z individuals demand purpose and accountability and advocate for green practices to be followed by the organizations in which they work. A recent Deloitte survey that covered 22,000 Gen Z and Millennial individuals across 44 countries revealed that nearly 60% are anxious about the environment, while more than 50% study a brand's environmental impact and policies before accepting a job. Additionally, the survey shows that one in six respondents have already changed their job or sector due to climate concerns.

Growing Importance of Workplace Safety and Mental Health and Well-being

In the interview titled ‘The Positive Domino Effect of Psychological Safety’, Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) Ulrike Schwarz-Runer emphasized that a psychologically safe environment encourages employee engagement, innovation, and satisfaction. When employees feel comfortable speaking up, sharing ideas, and admitting mistakes without any fear of negative consequences, they contribute more effectively to organizational success. In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, where new technologies and remote work arrangements pose unique challenges, prioritizing psychological safety is essential for ensuring employee well-being and business success.

Gen Z employees are aware of and identify with the needs highlighted by BCG. Raised with a heightened awareness of safety and well-being, they demand secure work environments and open communication about potential risks. This, along with their emphasis on psychological health, underscores the need to create safe workplaces.

Navigating the Hybrid Work Model

Gen Z prioritizes flexibility and autonomy, which is leading to a shift towards hybrid work models. They believe the hybrid approach allows organizations to tap into the benefits of remote work, such as flexibility and access to a wider talent pool, while also providing the advantage of frequent face-to-face interactions.

Triggered by Gen Z aspirations, many management consulting firms have already started adapting to these new requirements. Evalueserve’s Insightsfirst Competitive Intelligence platform has captured many such initiatives by top firms.

  • Deloitte has decided to close four of its 50 offices in the UK (Gatwick, Liverpool, Nottingham, and Southampton). All 500 employees who worked in these offices will retain their positions on work-from-home contracts.
  • EY has collaborated with Women in Cloud to equip women employees with opportunities for upskilling; career advancement; and leadership roles in artificial intelligence, cloud, and cybersecurity, thereby reshaping its leadership landscape.
  • PwC sponsored the Android Opera TOKYO, a move that showcases the firm’s emphasis on fostering diverse talent pipelines and building a workplace that celebrates differences.
  • KPMG is planning to run 'energy check-ins' to gauge if an employee is working too much and not taking enough time off. Employee managers will talk to those who are overworking and ensure that steps are taken to improve their well-being.
  • A&M has established a committee to promote inclusivity for neurodivergent employees. The committee aims to raise awareness about neurodiversity and celebrate the unique talents of neurodivergent individuals.

To attract top talent and succeed in an evolving business landscape, management consulting firms must adapt to the priorities of Gen Z individuals. The process of adaptation will require them to align their values with Gen Z's emphasis on purpose-driven work, foster inclusive environments, and prioritize sustainability. Additionally, firms must prioritize employee well-being and embrace flexible work arrangements to meet the demands of this generation. By taking these steps, all companies, including management consulting firms, can create a positive work culture and position themselves for long-term success.
